Cave of the French, spectacular.
Cueva de los Franceses. Located in the municipal area of Revilla de Pomar, very close to Aguilar de Campoo. It is included in the Geopark of Las Loras and in the protected area of Covalagua. Declared a Geopark by UNESCO since May 2017. It receives this name because the bodies of French soldiers who died during the battles fought there during the War of Independence around the year 1808 were deposited through a hole in the upper part. It has a visitable route of 500 meters. It is situated in a limestone plateau area within the plateau of La Lora.
It features a visitor reception room right at its entrance and a video projection room with educational content about the cave and its area. The main characteristic of the cave is its great beauty in stalactites, stalagmites, and columns. The cover that shelters the visitor reception room as well as the entrance to the cave is also striking.
Gift of Nature
Prehistory has something to do with the French soldiers, those soldiers of Napoleon who tried to dominate Spain. They encountered a detachment of Cantabrian hussars under the command of General Porlier. Little did they imagine that this karstic formation cave would be their final resting place. Perfectly preserved, it has reached our days and we can visit it. We can observe stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones that emerge from the limestone mantles over almost a kilometer. Besides the cave, from the Valcabado viewpoint, there is an impressive view over the Valderredible Valley. Part of the Geological Reserve of Las Loras can also be observed.
1.5 kilometers from the cave, you will find the Menhir of Canto Hito. It is a tall limestone monolith. Especially relevant are the thousands of years that these landscapes, inhabited by our ancestors since the Neolithic, have witnessed.
