Santa Cecilia of Aguilar de Campoo
Santa Cecilia de Aguilar de Campoo. Santa Cecilia in Aguilar de Campoo is a temple located on the hillside of the town's castle. It is visible from any point in the town. The current temple dates back to the late 12th century or early 13th century. It consists of three naves with a triple apse.
Its tower, located in the apsidal space on the south wall side, catches our attention.
The square-plan tower consists of three sections, with semi-circular openings and twin arches. Its sculptural decoration is focused on the interior. The two main jewels are two capitals located on the triumphal arch. The most famous one depicts the scene of The Massacre of the Innocents. It is of great beauty and harmony, with detailed chainmail armor on the soldiers and very expressive faces. On the other side, there is a vegetal capital with acanthus leaves and grape clusters, with particularly notable figures of harpies underneath.
