Route Jesús Calleja, ideal for cycling
Jesús Calleja Route. The adventurer, Jesús Calleja, mountaineer and presenter from León, designed this all-terrain bicycle (MTB) route in collaboration with experts from the Santa María La Real Foundation. Its objective? Make known worldwide through the Volando Voy program, a small part of the great heritage wealth that the North of the province of Palencia treasures. Not all the Romanesque buildings in the area are there, nor perhaps the best known ones. The route, at the end of the day, is nothing more than an invitation to continue traveling through our land, to explore other paths, other paths... An incentive to return and continue discovering landscapes, gastronomy and people. We are clear that our province is experienced with all the senses and here we show you a small part, just a pinch, of everything we can offer you...The Romanesque bicycle route that we have traced in the north of Palencia passes through:
1. The SANTA MARÍA LA REAL MONASTERY. In Aguilar de Campoo. A beautiful national historical artistic monument built between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.2.THE CHURCH OF SANTA JULIANA, in CORVIO. It dates back to the thirteenth century and very close to the town there is a necropolis of tombs excavated in the rock.3.The CHURCH OF SAN MARTÍN OBISPO, in MATALBANIEGA. A temple from the late twelfth century. It has more than seventy pieces on the cornice of animals, musicians, erotic figures and vegetation.4. The church of VILLAVEGA DE AGUILAR. It was built between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. It is a rural church characteristic of the Palentino Romanesque.5. In CILLAMAYOR is the church of Santa María La Real, from the mid-twelfth century. Inside there is a baptismal font where the signature of the person who carved it appears: “Pedro de Cilla”.6. The church of San Andrés, in MATABUENA. Construction began at the beginning of the thirteenth century.7. The church of BUSTILLO DE SANTULLÁN stands out for the reddish color of its stone and its belfry. It was restored in 2009.8. The church of Santa Marina, in VILLANUEVA DE LA TORRE. From the end of the twelfth century. This church has been opened since she was a teenager by an adorable old woman: Carlina.9. This is the church of SALINAS DE PISUERGA, it is not Romanesque, but Gothic. It is from the sixteenth century.10. The church of BARCENILLAS DE PISUERGA was built in three construction campaigns. It began in the Romanesque era and the last reform ended in the 19th century.11. The church of Santa Eulalia and the Asunción de la Virgen church, from the end of the twelfth century. Both in BARRIO DE SANTA MARÍA.12. The Santa Cecilia church, in VALLESPINOSO DE AGUILAR. From the end of the twelfth century. It is an example of fusion between Romanesque and nature.
